    Sophos unveils ‘next-generation end-user protection’ plan

    Cyber-sec specialist Sophos today announced updated versions of key products from its endpoint protection portfolio in pursuit of what the company called “next-generation end-user protection”.

    “Whereas desktop antivirus may have once been sufficient endpoint protection, today’s cyber threat landscape requires a more comprehensive approach to create a secure computing environment,” Sophos said in a statement.

    StarLink signed as Palo Alto distributor

    Security-focused value-added distributor StarLink has signed a distribution agreement with Palo Alto Networks.

    Under the agreement, StarLink will sell and support the Palo Alto Networks enterprise security platform offering through its extensive network of channel partners to enterprise and government customers in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council).

    Microsoft dials back Win 10 upgrade rhetoric on Phone platform

    Microsoft has performed an apparent one-eighty on its previous pledge to Windows Phone 8 users that their handsets would become part of the much-hyped Windows 10 ecosystem, the Register reported.

    "There will be Windows 10 upgrades for all Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices :) And we will release new Windows 10 models in the future!" the software giant tweeted in November from its @Lumia account.

    But now Microsoft appears to have noticed that not all handsets will be compatible with its in-development platform.

    Zain KSA hires Huawei to manage NOC

    Zain KSA has hired Huawei to manage and operate its network operations centre (NOC) for three years, in a bid to further improve customer experience.

    As part of the agreement, Huawei took responsibility for the management and operation of the Zain NOC, converging all existing services and technologies and monitoring network traffic since 1st May. This includes 24/7 monitoring of the performance of all services to enhance subscriber quality.

    Zain KSA reduces net losses by 23% during 2014

    Zain KSA have posted its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2014, ending 31 December, 2014. Net losses were narrowed by 34% year-on-year during the quarter to SAR 306 million ($81.6 million), down from SAR 462 million ($123.2 million) a year earlier, and reflect a 23% drop in net loss for the year.

    The company also recorded an increase in gross margin to reach 52% in 2014, up from 48% in 2013.

    Ransomware targeting users in the UAE

    A new variant of ransomware appears to be affecting users in the GCC and the UAE in particular, according to security company ESET.

    ESET said that it has recorded multiple incidences of the CTB-Locker ransomware in the region in a short space of time. CTB-Locker encrypts and locks users data and attempts to extract a ransom of 8 bitcoins, currently equivalent to $1680, from the victim.

    Airtel names new CEO for Africa

    Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel has appointed Christian de Faria as CEO of Airtel Africa, effective 1 January, 2014.

    De Faria will join Airtel Africa on September 16, 2013. He will be based in Nairobi and will report to Manoj Kohli, who currently heads up the African unit as part of his role as CEO of international operations.
